I believe in the power of the natural world to form us in any number of ways. Creation immerses us in a physical space of encounter with God in a unique way. The outdoors provides a chance to set aside distractions in a way our everyday lives rarely afford and disrupts our everyday rhythms, forcing us to a new level of attentiveness. Outdoor experiences also provide a distinctively unique communal experience, placing us in a space of interdependence with any number of our defenses removed or less accessible. The physical challenges inherent in the outdoors connect us with our bodies in sometimes new and powerful ways. It is by no means the only way to encounter God, but I believe it is one our current cultural and societal moment is in desperate need of.
I have led outdoor experiences of or a variety of types, activities, lengths, and levels of immersion. I have worked primarily with beginners and am confident that no matter you or your group’s particular experience and/or excitement about engaging with the outdoors, we can craft something together that is stretching but not debilitating. Whether you are looking for half a day, one night, or a week or more and for a group of friends, parent-child, your small group, or a topically-specific trip and participants, I would be happy to work to craft a space for your particular goals. My deepest level of experience and skill comes in the areas of backpacking, canoeing, and biking, but I also have experience in rock climbing, kayaking and other activities and can partner with others to lead them at varying levels depending on your group’s needs and interests.
Regardless of the activity and design, my desire with outdoor experiences is not one of mere adventure or consumption, but the crafting and integration of these spaces as a part of and toward holistic spiritual formation. Experiences will also adhere to good Leave No Trace practices and a high level of respect, stewardship, and care for the wonder of creation!
